1. Metallurgy. A constituent of phosphorus-rich irons and steels which is a eutectic of austenite and iron phosphide (and sometimes also cementite) and contains dissolved phosphorus.

Sauveur (Boston)..suggested [in correspondence]..‘Steadite’, to designate the eutectic alloy of iron and the phosphide Fe3P formed in iron rich in phosphorus. 1925Machinery XXVI. 501/1 Steadite is distributed throughout the metal and gives the abrasive action previously mentioned. 1964S. Physical Metall. xi. 327 Steadite is relatively brittle, and with high phosphorus content, the steadite areas tend to form a continuous network outlining the primary austenite dendrites. 1975Brit. 2. Min. A siliceous variety of apatite, usu. containing iron, found as yellowish needles in basic slag.
